Stowe is the name everyone types first: a classic New England ski village under Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak, with a main street of restaurants and shops and a mountain road lined with lodges.
But the village fills up and prices climb in season. Base yourself a short drive south, in the wooded hills of Duxbury or Berlin, and you can have Stowe’s mountain and its breweries by day and quiet acreage at night. This is a guide to visiting Stowe from about forty minutes out.
The mountain and the village
Stowe Mountain Resort sits under Mount Mansfield, with a big spread of terrain and a polished base village; it’s on the Epic pass. The town itself, a few miles down the Mountain Road, is worth a day on its own — a walkable main street, the Stowe Recreation Path along the river, and shops and restaurants. From our Duxbury cabins it’s thirty-nine minutes; from Boyer Estate in Berlin, forty-three.
The breweries
Stowe and neighboring Waterbury make up one of the best beer corners in the country, and the tour is easy from here. The Alchemist — home of Heady Topper — is 33 minutes from the Wychwood cabins, with a beer cafe and outdoor space. von Trapp Brewing’s bierhall pours German lagers with schnitzel and apfelstrudel, 32 minutes out. Stowe Cider’s taproom is 33, and Idletyme, on the Stowe bike path, another 33. You can make a day of it and still be home in under an hour.
Beyond the slopes
In warmer months, the Stowe Recreation Path runs five-plus miles along the West Branch, flat and easy. Smugglers’ Notch — the narrow pass road between Stowe and Jeffersonville — is a good drive when it’s open, with trailheads and boulders along the way. Ben & Jerry’s original factory is in Waterbury, between here and Stowe, if you’re traveling with kids.
Where you’ll stay
We have two wooded estates about forty minutes from Stowe. Wychwood, in Duxbury, is two log cabins on ten private acres — closer to the skiing, with Mad River Glen and Sugarbush 20 to 22 minutes away. Boyer Estate, in Berlin, is a freestanding cottage and a private-entrance suite on the edge of a state forest, twelve minutes from Montpelier, with a private outdoor sauna. All four are pet-free, with keypad check-in. Whichever you pick, Stowe stays a short drive north.
