Sugarbush is the big mountain of the Mad River Valley — two peaks, Lincoln and Ellen, a wide spread of terrain, and an Icon pass that pulls skiers from all over. It has everything a full resort day needs, and in season the base area fills accordingly.
Our cabins sit twenty-two minutes away, on ten wooded acres in Duxbury. This is a guide to skiing Sugarbush from a quieter base — the mountain, the other peaks within reach, and where to eat — for guests who’d rather leave the resort behind at the end of the day.
The mountain
Sugarbush spreads across two peaks. Lincoln Peak is the main base, with the village, lifts, and most of the services; Mount Ellen, a few miles north, is higher and usually quieter. Between them there’s terrain for every level, from long cruisers to steep trees. It’s on the Icon pass, so it draws a crowd on weekends.
More than one mountain
Where the cabins sit makes a multi-mountain trip easy. Mad River Glen is twenty minutes away — a skier-owned co-op with no snowboarding, the single chair, and steep natural terrain for an old-school day. Bolton Valley is twenty-nine minutes, smaller and cheaper, with night skiing and no Icon or Epic strings attached. You can ski a different mountain each day without moving where you sleep.
Where to eat
Canteen Creemee Company in Waitsfield is eleven minutes out — new-style creemees plus fried chicken and burgers. Prohibition Pig in Waterbury is thirteen minutes: barbecue and a brewery, with a full restaurant on one side and a casual brew spot on the other. For groceries, Stewart’s Shops is six minutes for the basics and Shaw’s in Waitsfield is a full supermarket at twelve.
Where you’ll stay
Wychwood is two log cabins on ten private wooded acres, up a town dirt road and then a short private one, with no neighbors in sight. Gardener’s Log Cabin sleeps four, with a clawfoot tub on the covered porch (seasonal), a cottage garden, and a fire pit cut into the hillside. Alchemist’s is the more tucked-away of the two — one bedroom, dark and quiet, built for a couple. Both are pet-free, with keypad check-in, twenty-two minutes from the Sugarbush lifts but well away from the après crowd.

How far are the Wychwood cabins from Sugarbush?
Twenty-two minutes by car. The route runs from Duxbury out along Ward Hill; both Waitsfield and Waterbury, thirteen minutes away, sit between the cabins and the resort for ski services, groceries, and dinner.
Can I ski more than one mountain from here?
Easily. Sugarbush is 22 minutes, Mad River Glen is 20 minutes, and Bolton Valley is 29 minutes, all reachable without changing where you stay. Stowe is 39 minutes if you want to add an Epic-pass day.
Are these cabins a good alternative to slopeside condos?
Yes, that’s what they’re for. On ten private wooded acres with no neighbors in sight, the Wychwood cabins trade base-area convenience for real quiet and privacy: twenty-two minutes from the lifts, but well away from the après crowd.
