Ski

  • Mad River Glen20 min

    A skier-owned co-op, one of the last mountains that bans snowboarding. Technical terrain, real moguls, serious vertical.

  • Sugarbush22 min

    Icon pass. Two peaks — Lincoln and Ellen — and a lot of terrain to roam.

  • Bolton Valley29 min

    Smaller and cheaper, on neither Icon nor Epic. A locals’ mountain with night skiing.

  • Cochran’s Ski Area31 min

    A tiny, family-owned hill just off I-89. Cheap, run partly on the honor system, with Olympic ski-racing roots. Bring the kids.

  • Stowe Mountain Resort41 min

    Epic pass. Vermont’s tallest peak, Mount Mansfield — expansive terrain and some night skiing.

  • Smugglers’ Notch1 hr 12 min in winter

    Route 108 through the Notch closes mid-October to mid-May, so the winter route goes the long way via Morrisville, Johnson, and Jeffersonville. Route it yourself — your GPS won’t know.

Hike

  • Hedgehog Brook Trailhead15 min

    Onto the Long Trail toward Burnt Rock (4.9 mi round trip) or Mount Ethan Allen (9.1 mi). Continues to Camel’s Hump.

  • Duxbury Window Trail25 min

    A moderate 5.1-mile out-and-back on the Long Trail to the Window overlook. Push on to the Camel’s Hump summit for a hard 12-mile day.

  • Monroe Trail — Camel’s Hump28 min

    A challenging 6-mile out-and-back to the best summit views in the range.

  • Hunger Mountain27 min

    4.1 miles from the Waterbury side. Short but hard, with some scrambling near the top.

  • Middlesex Trailhead35 min

    Into the Worcester range: Mount Hunger (5.1 mi) or White Rock (4.9 mi), with a connecting trail to loop them.

  • Little River State Park24 min

    Stevenson Brook Trail, an easy streamside walk (icy in early spring). Day-use fee $4 adult, $2 child, May through October.
