Eat

  • Wayside10 min

A classic diner that has been here forever: big, nostalgic, inexpensive, open till 8:30. Good any time of day; we go for breakfast.

  • Folino’s Pizza9 min · Northfield

Our go-to nearby pizza — one of the better pies around, with indoor and outdoor seating.

  • Pearl Street Pizza13 min · Barre

The best pizza in the area, Brooklyn quality. Cool room, an authentic menu, and a good Aperol Spritz.

  • Sarducci’s11 min

Long-standing Italian — the standards done well, in a big, warm room.

  • House of Tang12 min

The best Chinese food around, hands down. Not much of a sit-down room, so take it to go.

  • Pho Capital12 min · Montpelier

Consistently good Vietnamese; the place for pho.

  • Royal Orchid13 min · Montpelier

Long-standing Thai and our top pick for it.

  • Buddy’s Famous11 min · Montpelier

A higher-end take on the fast-food burger. Get the tots and a shake.

Drink

  • Good Measure Pub & Brewery9 min

The close one — a good local brewery with solid beers across styles, honest pub food, and seating indoors and out.

  • Barr Hill by Caledonia Spirits14 min

A well-known gin distillery with a cocktail bar. Excellent cocktails, snack-sized plates, outdoor seating; a high-end night out.

  • Three Penny Taproom12 min · Montpelier

A very good bar and restaurant with a long list of local drafts — Hill Farmstead among them — and good food.

  • Charlie O’s11 min

The local dive: pool tables, sometimes music. Fun if that’s your kind of night.

Coffee & Bakeries

  • Carrier Roasting Co.9 min

Very good coffee and a few pastries, plus beans to take home.

  • Capitol Grounds12 min · Montpelier

Family-run, roasts its own beans, pours a very good drip alongside sandwiches and pastries.

  • Bohemian Bakery12 min

Fresh pastries daily and good espresso drinks. A few excellent lunch sandwiches and garlicky soups too — they sell out, so come early.

  • Red Hen Baking12 min · Montpelier

The much-loved Vermont bakery — started in Duxbury back in 1999, then Middlesex for years, and now on Main Street downtown. Excellent bread, pastries, sandwiches, and coffee.
